The top is your standard 2 pickup 3 way Switch. The bottom is for the middle pickup. When the bottom is in the bottom position the middle is off. When in the middle the middle pickup is added to whatever the top has selected so you get your 2nd and 4th position straty sounds or all 3 pickups at once. The top position shuts the bass and treble pickup off and just plays the middle.
